In what looked to be a turn around in good fortune and performance from the Unitronic JDC-Miller MotorSport team after leading majority of the sixth round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Championship at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, an unfortunate fuel pressure and steering rack failure with 15 minutes to go dropped the team down the order to a 4th place finish.

MONTREAL, CANADA – With the summer season of races heating up, the Unitronic JDC-Miller MotorSports team has been hard at work trying to solve some of the reliability issues that have cost them glory at so many of the previous IMSA races. With only 7 days between when the team’s transporter arrived back at the JDC-Miller MotorSport headquarters in Savage, Minnesota until it would need to leave for the next race, the full time crew members worked away night and day to find solutions to the reliability issues they had seen before.

Having found some potential solutions, the team optimistically headed to Lime Rock Park, which has been a JDC-Miller MotorSport favorite after a victory in 2018, and a second place finish in 2019. The weekend started out just as planned with two solid practice sessions for the team finishing no lower than 4th place, while working on long distance running and not necessarily on outright pace. Qualifying brought mixed conditions for driver Chris Miller, with a torrential downpour minutes before the session. Navigating the tricky conditions, Miller wanted to make sure he got a good starting position without risking an incident in qualifying, and that is exactly what he was able to achieve with a 4th place finish in qualifying!

Known as the ‘Bull Ring’ of race tracks, the race got off to an quarrelsome start with many drivers making contact and in the process starting driver Chris Miller doing his best to avoid the carnage, getting collected by the Alfa Romeo of Roy Block, spinning the #17 out in turn 1 and dropped him down the order. Luckily without major damage, Miller was able to continue and started to work his way back up the order! With minimum drive time set at 40 minutes and a caution/safety car period coming out at that exact time for another incident on track, the team decided to pit and use this opportunity to swap drivers and inspect the damage on the car.

With a great pit stop by the Unitronic JDC-Miller MotorSport crew members, the #17 rocketed up the order and restarted in 6th place. South African born Mikey Taylor made quick work of the remaining TCR cars ahead and rocketed the #17 Audi RS3 LMS to the front where he stayed for the majority of the race. With the climax of the race approaching and 15 minutes to go while leading the field, Taylor radioed the team reporting there was an engine cut due to fuel pressure , coming out of the corner, which he said was manageable until the end, Unfortunately to add onto that, the steering rack which ironically had been replaced before the event started to lock up causing the car to handle sporadically in the turns.

Unfortunately with the combination of issues, Taylor could not defend against the charging pack behind and had to give up the lead ultimately dropping him down the order to a 4th place finish. “There were still a lot of positives from the weekend, I got to spend time with our awesome group of guys and my co-driver Chris, we got to represent our fantastic partners, and we led a bunch of laps. Without the issues for sure we should have won, and I'm mostly just disappointed to not be able to reward all the hardworking guys behind the scenes with a victory. We’ll be back, better than ever and give it another shot in Wisconsin!” said the Atlanta based South African.
