Unitronic® is proud to release its Carbon Fiber Intake System and Turbo Inlet for the B9 and B9.5 Audi® RS 4® and RS 5® equipped with the twin turbo 2.9TFSI® engine. This RS 4 / RS 5 Intake and RS 4 / RS 5 Turbo Inlet are designed to dramatically improve airflow with gains of up to 38% over the factory equipment while supporting both the stock turbochargers and TTE720 hybrid turbochargers via Unitronic's clever 48mm and 51mm adapter rings. As with all Unitronic Intake Systems, this unit provides improved throttle response, seamless integration and perfect fitment while greatly enhancing turbo induction sounds. Its stunning 2/2 twill carbon fiber weave adds a striking presence in the 2.9TFSI engine bay as well.
At Unitronic, development begins with setting the objectives; performance, efficiency, aesthetics and quality. Operations start with 3D scanning the 2.9TFSI engine bay and OEM components with its in-house 3D scanner. Once 3D scan data has been collected and processed, Unitronic Hardware Engineers then interact with the 3D models to identify fitment constraints, mounting locations, other component locations, etc. to ensure the final product fits perfectly within the “envelope”.
As the initial designs develop; evolution begins with rapid prototyping utilizing our in-house Stratasys 3D printer. Within hours, Unitronic Engineers are able to have a complete working printed prototype, allowing for test fitments to be performed on the vehicle, functional testing to be completed and flow data collected to further validate the designs.
After countless hours of test fitments and product validations through several iterations, the result is a design that maximizes the room available in the engine bay while exhibiting smooth volumetric transitions where every facet is effectively executed for form and function.
Unitronic Hardware Engineers carefully benchmarked the OEM Audi RS5 intake and turbo inlet versus the Unitronic Intake and Turbo Inlet in a controlled environment using our in-house Superflow SF-1020 flow bench. Our team observed massive air flow gains of up to 38% with the Unitronic Intake and Turbo Inlet. This drastic air flow improvement allows the turbochargers to work more efficiently and achieve target boost with less stress resulting in improved reliability.
The Unitronic Air Duct takes advantage of the large opening in the OEM grille and draws massive amounts of air straight to the Unitronic Airbox without turbulence thanks to its smooth transitions. The Airbox (which is shared with other B9 2.0TFSI and 3.0TFSI applications) takes full advantage of the available room in the engine bay in order to maximize the air being fed into the turbochargers. As with our popular 2.5TFSI EVO Carbon Fiber Intake System, this Airbox features diagonal slits which enhance turbocharger induction sounds and DV recirculation sounds with drainage provisions for water ingress as well.
In addition to finding airflow limitations with the factory airbox and air duct, the factory turbo inlet was also identified as an airflow restriction therefore, Unitronic engineered its B9 RS5 Turbo Inlet to alleviate restrictions and complete the package. Constructed of the same high quality carbon fiber, this Turbo Inlet features a larger bore to draw massive amounts of air from the Unitronic Airbox then with the help of its integrated divider, sends equal amounts of air to the individual turbochargers. Using our unique 48mm or 51mm adapters, this Turbo Inlet is designed to work with the factory turbochargers or the TTE720 hybrid turbochargers for the B9 2.9TFSI platform. A factory style PCV connection is maintained for OEM-level fitment as well.
Our pursuit for perfection is applied even in the most minute areas of product design and in this case, we leaned on our abundant experience developing Intake Systems to incorporate high quality EPDM couplers for this B9 RS5 Intake System. These durable EPDM couplers allow ample tolerance for engine movement on an item that is both affixed to a dynamic engine and a rigid chassis instead of using traditional rigid silicone.
This offers a superior amount of flexibility over traditional silicone, while still offering, with its clever design, the rigidity and strength to be highly reliable on the 2.9TFSI engines. Taking the design and engineering one step further, Unitronic engineers created a design that allows for smooth, laminar airflow on the inside walls, while maintaining flexibility through the means of a non-collapsing structural rib profile. Unitronic EPDM couplers are designed to perfectly align with the bead rolls on the carbon fiber tubes, to ensure a perfect and seamless connection; hose clamp guides ensure perfect alignment.
This sectional of the coupler shows a 3D CFD representation of airflow across the ribbed profiled construction. The ID of the ribs matches the ID of the interconnecting tubes for a seamless transition. As a result, even under varying conditions where flexing and stretching happen, airflow remains uninterrupted.
