Road America delivered a consistent and reliable weekend for the Unitronic JDC-Miller MotorSports team at their home track, near Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Qualifying 2nd and surviving a wild wet race to take a consecutive top 5 finish, in what looks to be a turn in luck and reliability for the #17 Audi RS 3 LMS TCR.

MONTREAL, CANADA – Weather is always a factor at Road America. The picturesque race track in Wisconsin has featured rain in the last three of five IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge events at the circuit. 2021 was no different with rain in the area from Friday throughout the course of the weekend, however as luck would have it both practice sessions and qualifying were in dry conditions, leaving the driving duo of Mikey Taylor and Chris Miller without any practice in wet conditions.

Qualifying meanwhile went off without a hitch, Chris Miller putting in a great effort to qualify the #17 in the second position, only beaten by one of the factory Hyundai efforts who decided to do with an alternate strategy starting their usual finishing driver and opting to have their Am-driver finish the 120-minute Saturday race. Happy with the qualifying effort Miller said “After struggling a bit in practice the team gave me a super fast car for qualifying. It would have been nice to get a few more tenths out of my best lap but starting on the front row is never a bad place to be!”.

Race day on Saturday started with dark skies and within 2 hours of the start of the race the skies opened up and flooded the circuit. Miller took the green flag start from the outside of the front row and managed the tricky conditions as best as he could. The team opted not to change the cars setup at all for the wet conditions, with the hesitation that it might dry up and leave them stranded mid race; though dry conditions never came and rain continued to fall throughout the race. Handing the car over to co-driver Mikey Taylor the Unitronic JDC-Miller MotorSports fitted a new set of wet Michelin tires and sent the South African on his way.

Unfortunately while making the pit stop under safety car conditions means the #17 would have to hustle back around the track to catch up to the back of the field without passing any other cars in front. Up front other TCR cars were struggling to get up to speed, and ultimately backed up the #17 entry preventing Taylor from catching the field and taking the eventual green flag some 9 seconds plus further back from the TCR class leader, setting up a huge task for him to try to hunt down a podium finish.

Taylor meanwhile set out on his task by laying down some flying laps some of which 2 seconds faster than the cars ahead, but much like other forms of racing, catching and passing are two different tasks and soon Taylor found himself blocked by some Hyundai competition. Eventually making his way around a few cars and into 5th place, Taylor unfortunately over-used his front tires while trying to catch the lead pack, and was unable to make much headway, ultimately settling for a 5th place finish, narrowly beating out fellow Audi competitor Road Shagger Racing. “It’s a strange day when you are upset with a top 5 finish in IMSA, but we all know this car and team should be finishing on the podium every race. We have had some great speed at times, and the crew have been working their asses off every race but we just haven’t been able to make it up onto the podium! We’ll come back stronger in California, but I just want to thank all of our team and partners for everything they have done, it’s an awesome operation to be a part of!” said Taylor.
